Chapter 6: Freedom from Dreams

Elandra shook her head and looked around, realizing she’d come back to the real world. Jahdin and Taro were surrounded by a mystical shield. The child she had hesitated to kill was also consumed in what appeared to be shimmering, undulating shadows. Behind them, violence ensued between the two armies and before her…

Cheron!

The treacherous bitch stood beside her master in full dragon form, watching the violence with an expression of glee. Rage filled Elandra’s heart and she stood up, unleashing a mighty roar. It drew the former advisor’s attention, making her eyes widen with surprise. The two stared at each other for a good, long moment, before Cheron broke the silence.

“So you didn’t die. What a shame.”

“I had to come back to deal with you,” Elandra said. “I’ll take great pleasure ripping your throat out.”

“You don’t have it in you, whelp!” Cheron flexed her wings. “I’ll destroy you utterly, wasting your bones and flesh as you helplessly enjoy the end of your precious Taro. And what is that…a human? You truly embraced the lunacy of an alliance?”

“It seems to be working.” Elandra stretched her neck. “Our combined forces are winning this day.”

“At such a cost!” Cheron dropped low, prepared for battle. “Why not embrace this with us? Enjoy the end of everything as we witness the dawn of a new and ordered world under my master’s rule! We would suffer no more of the intrigues of court, no more fools to lord their power over us.”

Elandra scraped the ground with her claw. “You’re describing servitude to a fool right now. Trading a leader for a dictator does not sound beneficial to anyone. This path…I extend the same offer to you. Turn back before it’s too late.”

“I’m afraid it’s beyond too late and I wouldn’t betray my master anyway.”

“Just your own kind,” Elandra muttered.

“Weakness did not deserve my devotion.”

“Then show me strength, traitor!” Elandra darted forward, her talons leading the way. Cheron shrunk back and dodged to the side, narrowly avoiding being opened up. The combat began, a wild melee where two titans grappled in deadly violence. Their jaws snapped near one another, their tails whipped as they dodged about to avoid horrific injury.

Cheron attempted to fly up but Elandra bit her back leg and dragged her back down. A roar of pain echoed over the valley as Cheron lashed backward in an attempt to get the back of her opponent’s neck.

Elandra proved too quick, hopping back and slashing with her claws. The tips took a slice out of Cheron’s cheek, spraying blood upon the stone. She attempted to take flight again, this time slapping Elandra with her tail hard enough to toss the dragon several feet. It bought her the time to get away.

Elandra pursued, flapping her wings hard to gain altitude then dash after her target. They circled twice before meeting, their back talons gripping one another. Both flapped their wings frantically to remain aloft as they bit and clawed each other with their other weapons.
